What is Valentine’s Day About?
By Gabe Navarro
Valentine’s Day
What is it about?
What does it mean?
Is it a day for love and hearts and
Other mushy stuff?
Or does it mean something more?
Perhaps it should be about peace, and
Spreading joy and love to all.
Or maybe it could be for sharing and
Helping others, giving to those less
Fortunate, or helping the community.
What if it is about simply being nice
And caring to those around you, not spreading
War or hatred or any of that bad stuff.
Or possibly it could mean actively supporting
Peace, and truly making a difference,
Like rallying against war, giving to charity,
Or doing local acts of heroism.
So what is Valentine’s Day truly about?
Don’t ask me, look deep within yourself
For your answer.
A New Kind of Friendship
by Kylie Mizushima
Hearts filled with candy
Does it make you feel good?
Can we change the routine?
Feel good because you are doing something good.
Peace, happiness, love can all relate into one day. You ask if it could?
This one day filled with peace
Filled with love
Filled with happiness
Can you make a difference on this one special day?
Does it hurt you to help out another person instead of staying greedy?
In this day - love should come along with peace and happiness
We should string together the pieces of the unfinished necklace
Instead of leaving it loveless and careless.
War, money, greed.
These are not all the things we need.
Step by step, hand in hand
We work together not only on this one special day, but forever
A Pencil or Two
by Erica Engler
Today, I lent out something
A pencil or two
It may not seem like much
And it does not help you
Stop the fighting
Stop the war
Be a little caring
Be a little strong,
Stand as one
And lend a pencil or two.
The Wonderful Gift
by Nasira Johnson
I sat in my room
With a box
Brown and blank and kind of heavy
I wrapped it up
And gave it to “her”
She gave it to her “mother”
Mother gave it to “father”
Father gave it to “co-worker”
Co-worker gave it to “boss”
Boss gave it to “friend”
(the “friend" happened to be the governor)
Governor gave it to “army general”
But general dropped it and it was in “yes” Osama Bin Laden's hands
But he liked it and held his fire
Soon the gift was being passed
Everywhere to Europe, the Middle East, China,
India, Japan, and Timbuktu.
Six months after I had mailed that gift the world had seemed not to exist
Everything had changed
“Peace in Iraq”-“Crime rate way down!”
All of the caring and sharing all through the town
Then a knock to my head stopped all the thoughts
A mailman at the door said
“a gift for you for exchange to your love”
I took the gift and signed my love
I opened the box and what do you know
The teddy bear I mailed tied with a bow
On the card it had said
“To the person who started this all thank you. We all love you.
-From,
The World!”
I turned and stared at the bear
It held our world in place
(The best valentine gift anybody could get is imaginary) World Peace!
Hope
by Jesslyn Whittell
The task:
To “Recreate Valentine’s Day
As a day of peace, sharing
Caring, unity, and hope.”
Mom’s driving home.
I sit next to her.
Staring out the window.
A billboard stands, proud & rigid.
It’s a message about a monk
That doesn’t just wish for peace, he
Works for it…
Hope. “Pass it on”
I agree, it’s a good point.
And it’s a start.
In two ways.
Its one of few posters that
Have unselfish meanings.
And hope itself is a start.
“Peace, sharing, caring , unity,
And hope.”
Hope is written last.
Hope is the forerunner
Hope comes first.
Unity follows.
United people care.
United, people care.
One sentence two meanings.
Caring is born of unity.
People who care don’t need to progress to
Sharing. They’re there.
You share your love and
Kindness. You share your
Time to give sympathy.
You share by sacrificing your
Happiness to feel empathy. You begin
to share more those emotions.
And when people can share, they
need not fight. Peace finally arrives.
But then why is peace listed first
in the line of ideas. It comes last. Answer:
peace is what people want.
It’s a goal. It’s the part of the now
that’s in tomorrow. And this too is a start.
People. No. The people. No. We, the
People, have begun to HOPE!
Try
by Mr. Baca
If I try
If you try
Perhaps we fly
Over perceived barriers
Of race, religion, creed and greed
If I try
If you try
Perhaps we cry
For those in despair
Decide to care- at least try.
Happy Day
by Wesley Lao
Valentine’s Day
It should be called Happy Day
On that day, feelings of love fly everywhere
On that day, love spreads like a disease on Valentine’s Day, we give to others and
We share our feelings
Valentine’s Day builds bonds between people…
…that binds and unites us in a way.
Rivalries on this day are overlooked
And hate is replaced with love and happiness.
Valentine’s Day
by Ellen Ray
Yeah yeah yeah…
Oh Valentine’s Day, we give love to others
Our brothers, friends, and mothers
Let’s give Valentine’s Day a whole new meaning…
Giving food, water, LOVE, to the people that need it.
Valentine’s Day
by Justin Ruder
The day of peace and happy is here
When you have secret admirers and don’t feel fear
The air blows your hair freedom is felt
The chocolates in the sun start to melt
Hearts are drawn pink and red
The soldiers are safe resting in bed
Peace signs around birds flying the sky
We see children so happy we all start to cry
The world reflects back digging deep down inside
Today is the day where no one tells lies
When light and dark combine so well
Sweet music is playing with clapping bells
The doors are open to a whole new store
You miss the people that changed your world before
Cupid is here living with love
He reminds us of people who live up above
You start a seed then grow so big
The parents that raised you as a kid
The past is gone, things you must live without
At times you thought your life was a doubt
Spread the care and feel for others
Treat everyone as your brothers
Through dust and rain you ride the train
Away, away, away, peace is everywhere.
Valentine’s Day
by Sarah Hepler
If someone asked you what you wanted for Valentine’s Day,
What would you say?
How about world peace?
Compassion, caring, and sharing at least.
And we unite as one,
And share our joy, under the sun.
Despite our differences we’ll link hands
Over mountains, across oceans, and over the sands.
Song will break out, like the Whos of Whoville.
All will be calm, and all will be still
Peace will be brought, around the world.
Tranquility will be carried
Day,
By Day,
By Day,
Until it stays.
Valentine’s Day Poem
by Arjun Jain
Valentine’s Day,
Having hope,
Working together,
Caring for people,
Giving to others,
Living in peace
Not hurting anyone,
No war,
No killing,
Only peace.
Joy,
Love,
Happiness,
Romance,
Compassion,
Life,
Peace.
Cupid?
By Lisa A. Suzuki
2 doves fly
As they reach the sky
In endless hope
Families unify
Friends multiply
As the times we share pass us by
We laugh and cry
Break through large barriers
Obstacles seem to disappear
The voices we hear they come hear
They are shedding a joyful tear
For us
For them
We can make a change
Come and gather
Link our hands
Take a stance
If we see a gleam of light
We'll go after it
With the 2 doves in the sky
Flying high
In endless hope
Serenity
You will see.
A Common Feeling
by McKenzie Givens
There’s nothing to love
Than love itself
A certain peace must come too
So if the world was full of love,
Would it be at peace too?
Or is it just an illusion
That the world is full of love.
What if, in fact, it was full of hate?
Perhaps love is just a feeling
As happiness and anger are.
Perhaps, to achieve true peace,
We ourselves must achieve true peace.
But if the world is not yet at peace,
It simply cannot love
Poem by Adriana Ramirez
A bird is here
It comes and goes
The chain of peace
Its revolving around
The goal we reach is finally here
The dreams are in the sky
Flying away with Cupid
Its heart and love have flown away
The time is here
It has gone away
The Green Heart
by Emily Goore
Valentine’s Day
Is a strange holiday
Red and pink hearts
Always play their hearts
But not this year
On February 14, 2008
I’m going green
Not red
My valentine will receive
Nothing close to red
Maybe a tree
With little green hearts
And a beautiful card
On recycled paper
I will not waste
And- resources
Of value
Trees
Have value
Do not waste them
Keep them living
By going green
Not red
A Virtue
by Samuel Wasserman
Roses are red
Violets are blue
Love is great but
Peace is a virtue
You can posses it
You can gain it
You can learn it too
But most importantly is to spread it.
To all of your peers, family and your world
And live with it as a sign on your face
A sign of sharing, caring, love, and peace
Peace is a virtue
Cupid’s Day Off
by Ali Ryan-Plasil
Its Cupid’s day off,
And in his place,
Is a Cupid with the same face
But a different mission, a different cause
To save humanity and all its flaws,
He’ll stop the war, he’ll give the world peace
He’ll end world hunger, so everyone has a piece
He’s another Ghandi with a bigger cause
His mission to save the hands and paws
Of everyone who loves this earth
And wants its beauty preserved
So on Valentine’s Day
He’ll be there
Giving money to the poor
Helping heat the sores
That all of us humans bring
The sub for cupid will be waiting
To help everyone, big and small
On a real Valentine- Cupid’s day off
A Real Valentine’s Day
by Brian Lewinstein
Valentine’s Day
A day of flowers, chocolate,
And a diapered baby with wings and magic arrows.
But what if we opened our eyes
To a larger picture?
Love can be harder than concrete it could stop many bullets in Iraq.
Love can be more satisfying than any chocolate
It could provide food and water for refugees in Darfur
Love can be a symbol of unity,
Reminding all of us in this great big
Green and blue planet of ours
That we’re supposed to live in harmony
So before you buy flowers on-line
And have them delivered on February 14,
Think of
HOPE
PEACE &
Oneness with everyone in the world
Not Much To Ask
By Emmitt Conklin
One day
One day a year
All I ask is one day a year
A day where no matter how bad the world is
We relax
And we come together and we forget
We forgot the war in Iraq
We forgot about Darfur
We forgot about global warming
We forgot about all our troubles for 1 day
We share a day of serenity
A day of hope
A day of peace
Forgive and forget
Let go of regret
I would make a bet
You will remember someone you met
And at the end of the rainbow
In a pot full of gold
Let go of your troubles
And cleanse your soul
Take the olive branch
And enjoy the dude ranch
Enjoy your vacation
In a messed up nation
Not too much to ask
Valentine's Day
by Jessica Ahern
Can a century-old tradition start anew?
Will the hearts be replaced?
A day when children will share, a
Nation will come together,
All on Cupids special day?
Instead of chocolate, would people
Give money to charity instead?
Restaurants, movies, and flower shops
Would have an all-time low, because
Everyone would skip work to help out
The homeless
A day when the president would order
12,000 meals to be given to the less-
Fortunate
A day when no tears would be shed, just
The ones of pure joy
A time where everyone would care about each
Other.
To forgive, all in harmony.
A day where someone else is a top
Priority.
A universal peace day
One Day
by Sasha Burik
Valentine’s Day
Is a day for love:
Your husband or wife,
Mother or father,
Brothers or sisters,
Sons or daughters
For loving the world,
The people you know,
Or do not,
Ones you’ve met
Or have not
It doesn’t matter
Because today we’re all better,
Cured of our sickness,
For just one day,
No fighting or hating,
We can throw it all away
Forgive those who’ve wronged us forget what they’ve done to us
Be in peace
With one another
With ourselves
And laugh
At everything else,
Wish
For it to stay,
This one day
Of love
Of peace
Peas and Carrots
by Joe Rosenbaum
Peace or love
Maybe
Peace and love
Can the two mix
They just don’t fit like peas and carrots
You have to want it
You have to fight for love
Sometimes for peace
But peace and love
Can bring families, communities,
Countries, worlds
Together
So this Valentine’s Day
Is it for peace
Love?
If it was about both
Then people would not fight
Nor declare war
They’d know what’s right and wrong
So think about it
Can they mix?
For a peaceful world?
Love For You And For Me
by Tyler Heritage
Love can be for a person
Love can be for a place
Love can be fro a thing
But for me, love is for peace
Love can be outside
Love can be inside
Love can be lost
But for me, love is everywhere
Love can hurt
Love can comfort
Love can scare
But for me, love can spread
What is love for you?
I See
by Grady Gitlin
Through my eyes
I see
I see beauty
Because I am the beholder
To choose
I choose a choice
To be happy
And see happiness
Without greed
Without need
The danger we create
And without hate
For then, I will live
And be who I am.
But it is only today
And tomorrow I will see again.
I will see beauty
From the eyes of the beholder
Because those eyes are mine
A Dream
by Liam Palladino
A dream is not seen by others
A dream can unify brothers
A dream can lead to a thought
Which can be sought to make a difference in the world.
To stop war and grief and disbelief
To put hope in you or two, three, four
Because the more and more dreams become
They can change the life of everyone
A dream can stop senseless killing and poverty
And put hope into you or me
So can’t you see?
Just dream
Hope
by Madison Bird
A day that we can break away
A day to clear our eyes from the disguise
That hides the true beauty of each other
This day we can be free
From anything we don’t want to be
It will remind us of the real person inside us
The caring and sharing person beside us
A dream that we can make come true
A dream for me and you
Together we can make a change
So we don’t have to make others lives rearrange
All of our lives are tightened by thick rope
We all just need a little hope
Cupid
by Katherine Budak
Have you ever heard of cupid?
The one Valentines Day soul?
Please don’t be exclusive
Giving is his role
Why can’t we be so kind?
All we are is hate and greed
War is only on our mind
Why can’t we plant a new seed?
All we need is hope
Forget about mutiny
Peace is just around the slope
Lets all live in unity
All we need to do is share
Show a little care
Make a difference in the world
That’s what Cupid’s all about!
Prayer
by Karen Ruhman
Shakespeare says “two lips, two blushing pilgrims”
Pilgrims pray for peace
Monks work for it
Men wish they could be home from the field
Hope. Peace. One in the same.
Always pray, always think, always do
Be one, and breathe, and think of a lost friend
Ancient monasteries echo with the hum
The hum of a bee in a rose, or the
Breath as it enters the lung
Live. Smile. Pray
A New Day
by Sage Lewis
A day where everybody gets a teddy bear
Not just the one person you love
A day when nobody feels left out
And knowing that you will go home happy
A day when everybody helps out the earth
Even one little thing can help
A day when everybody gets along
And nobody gets hurt
A day when nobody starves
And doesn’t have to worry about money
A day where there is nothing but peace
That would be a great day
That would be a NEW DAY
Something we have never seen before.
Poem
by Saba Saberi
Valentine's Day
What does it mean to you?
Mushy cards, chocolates, roses
But what if we could change
That day to another one
A day of peace, happiness
Where we acknowledge the people
Who matter, who are suffering
And make a difference
Not only in our lives, but theirs
When everybody comes together
To show that they care
Now that is showing
Love, and compassion, and hope
Where the true meaning of LOVE
Is recognized among us all
That is when love is not shown by cards, or fake I love you’s
But . .
By compassion and caring
Be aware of what you
Do this Valentine’s Day
Poem
by Sara Marcus
A day of color
Of joy
Of hope
Where the colors dance and sing
They help each other
Hand by hand
Around the time of spring
It’s a gift to others
And will always be
From sister, brothers, and families
Colors don’t always give joy and harmony
They also have secrets from you

I was walking my dog Rubble on Valentine’s day
When I heard a slight flutter from up, up and away
I turned my gaze upwards, looked up to the sky,
And-ouch garl! Dagrabbit!- I got shot in the eye.
I pulled out the arrow and winced from the pain,
Then, all of the sudden I was shot once again.
The arrow lodged quite deep in my leg,
I fell to my knees, and started to beg,
“Please vicious warrior, put your arrows away,
I’m trying to enjoy my Valentine’s Day,”
And then (with my good eye) I saw the young lad,
Cupid above… in red diaper clad.
He pulled back his bow and leveled his arm,
“Don’t worry,” he said “I mean you no harm.”
And then – Whap! Bam! Kaboom! – and – Ouch! Ouchie! Ow!
An arrow through my arm, I was getting mad now.
“I can't take it,” I yelped “The pain is too much!”
“It’s a blessing,” he said, “My heavenly touch.”
“With the first person you see, you’ll fall deep in love.”
And he left me there, bleeding, and flew away, up above.
Then I looked down… and saw my dog – Rubble.
And now, oh my goodness, I’ve got so much trouble. –
I’m wounded all over, I’m hurt and I’m cut,
And, on top of it all… I’m in love with a mutt.
It should have been a day of peace, because (between me and you) everyone says that love hurts…
and, believe me, it’s true.
Valentine’s Day Poem by Anonymous
Maybe it takes more than one
Maybe it takes others believing in that one to really make a difference
If we truly believed in that one
They could do anything they wanted to
They could save the world of pain and suffering,
They could make people care of more than just one thing,
They could fill the world with hope and love,
Make even the people watching from above,
Cry with joy and happiness in their tears
Because the day they died fighting for is here
The day when nobody has to hide anymore
Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for
Valentine’s Day Poem
by Mikaela Panza
Valentine’s Day
A day to play
On this day we’ll end the war!
Peace birds will soar.
Instead of fighting
Fist to fist
We’ll stand together,
Hand in hand,
Heart to heart
Jokes and laughter fill the air
Happiness cures the saddest form despair
What is Valentine’s Day
by Farnaz Zanjani
Valentine’s Day,
A day for loving,
A day for giving,
A day for sharing,
A day for showing compassion for others
Love is in the air,
So prepare to care
So live, laugh, love,
On Valentine’s Day
Poem by Steven Loveless
Valentine’s Day….
A day of peace, love, and also my half birthday
Yet, when you give a person a valentine
You don’t realize who’s crying
Out of all the suffering in the world
You only realize the gift you’ve just hurled
But when you do realize
All you’ve been hearing are lies
Thank You for thinking
Valentine’s Day
by Josh Ravicz
We must free ourselves we must
From hatred and distrust
So take this great day
To let peace come, it may
If we share
If we care
Hope will fill the air
It’s Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day

On Valentine’s Day
Reach out a helping hand
Let peace and love soar
Make a Difference
by Diana Dallal
His heart was compressed,
Twisted with pain
He tried not to show
The rest of the world
His aching smallness
He took it out on
The ones he loved.
Joined a gang in his rage,
Learned so many bad things
Walking around this town,
With hate ringing in his ears,
He sought out the worst
Of what he know in this world
Gun shots heard in the dark
Led this wretched soul out into the dead of night
To find that his best friend
Was gone form the world
Killed with a bullet in his heart
How many hearts would have to be broken
Before peace and love could be found?
How could God be so merciless
When he’d lost enough as it was?
As the days wore on and
His hate for love grew stronger,
He began to look for an escape.
Never did he stop to think
That his escape wouldn’t be
An escape at all, but
Merely an excuse.
Death was
A sorry attempt at happiness
But just like every other human being
To walk this earth,
He saw it as
A chance for peace.
To be free of the burdens,
Locked within
To rise above the anger, the pain
And so one dreary day,
Not a person in sight
Did he commit the ultimate
Self-betrayal
This man has stabbed himself
Slowly and painfully
And on the verge of death
With one last breath,
He took it all back.
All his hate
All his rage
And into the silence
He wondered aloud
“Why did I choose death over life?”
The sacrifice he’d made
To have a free spirit
Wasn’t worth it at all
And with regret in his heart
This sorry man had one last thought
Maybe if we could stop hating and begin to love
Our world could be better, he thought
He sputtered,
And shook,
And knew deep down,
That the choice he’d made
Wasn’t noble at all,
And with a dying breath,
As he fell to the floor,
This man held love
In his sore heart.
“I’m sorry God
Take me away!” he cried
And he gasped
And went still
For this foolish man
Was dead.
Was alive no more . .?
What is Valentine’s Day?
Is it all about love?
Can we reinvent this day,
And change it for the better?
It could be a day of peace
A day a year when fighting will cease.
One day with no wars, no fights, just peace,
Where the whole world is united
Boom- Boom
by Nick Jaffe
The sound I do not want to hear
My mother’s footsteps
The grenades being thrown
Boom-boom can mean
Me getting in trouble
Or an innocent man dying
There’s no love anymore
For the human life
When the boom-booms in Iraq stop
People get to see their families
When the boom-booms at my house stop
I’m not in trouble
A boom-boom can be a good thing
I could be in a movie
Boom-boom
The thunder in the sky
I can only hope
That no one else will die
On Valentine’s Day
by Lizzie Sokolich
People gather to say
“I love you”
Will you love them too?
Lets hang with friends
Until this day ends
Then you’ll think back
Memories
Happiness soars, like a kite
Let’s end these wars, with our might
Funny
by Devante Shootes
Don’t be hatin’
Only appreciating
Maybe you’re smug
Or look like a bug
Don’t be ugly
Don’t be mean
Don’t be mad
Don’t be lean
Don’t hate in ‘08
Oh, Cupid
by Megan Kincaid
Cupid is known to be devious
Changing who we fall for
For better or for worse
Maybe Cupid could change his ways
And his bow could strike you
And you would love everything
Not someone in particular
Oh, Cupid and your bow of peace
Please help us change the ‘world of hate’
Your little bow could puncture our hearts
Making us do good
Not be prejudiced to someone.
The puncture from your bow will reverse our prejudice
Oh, Cupid and your bow of love,
We love your tricks and we cherish them
Every Valentine’s day.
You don’t have to change your ways,
But if you had the big heart
Which you are said to have.
Maybe on one day you can change it up.
The poison from your bow could change it up.
Making them be happy for once
That then making their happiness
Cause their daughters joy to see their
Depressed mother happy for a change.
Valentine’s day is a harsh holiday
For those who you have forgotten
To strike with the tips of your arrow
Nobody wants to be alone
So if you use the bow to bring the world together
Nobody will ever be alone
And we the mortals may be as happy
As the gods?
But we can’t put all the blame
For no world peace on a baby with a bow
The inhabitants of the world must unify we must take the first steps
And Cupid will help us once we have tried
Even though we try to think not
But our steps are more important than
A bow.
Our steps to love and peace are
Larger than you know.
Penetrate
by Patrick Needham
“Struck by cupids arrow”
It’s kind of a funny thing
But does it make you fall in love ?
And make your heart sing.
I think it’s an arrow of peace
Unity and friendship
And Valentines is a holiday of hope
And not just about red lips
Just sit and think about it
A nationwide holiday:
All about sharing and caring
And making a difference; that’s
What I have to say
